Hey girl! I’ve gotten a few questions about my braces experience. It is really common nowadays for teens to have braces so I thought I would share my experience and everything you need to know if you are getting braces or thinking about it!
My Braces Backstory:
I had braces for three years, and man did I really need them 😬
I have a really small mouth, and I had a lot of teeth, LOL. My teeth didn’t have enough room to fit in my mouth without crowding so I had to get quite a few teeth pulled over the years before I could get braces. If I can remember right, I’ve gotten a total of 7 pulled by the dentist, yikes right?
Anyway, like I already mentioned, I needed braces, like really bad. I was quite self-consious about my teeth and I didn’t like to smile showing my teeth.
I got my braces on when I was in Grade 7 and got them off in Grade 10. I was supposed to have the braces on for two and a haf years, but it ended up being a little longer than expected.
What To Expect:
I was super worried about the pain of getting the braces put on, but like my Dad told me, a few years of pain but then a lifetime of straight teeth.
The first two weeks I had my braces on they were really sore. However, it is different for everyone. Some of my friends who have also had braces said they only felt soreness and pain for a few days.
But hey, it gives you a really great excuse to eat a lot of yogurt, ice cream, and apple sauce for a while! 😉
After I got through the initial week of getting braces on and my teeth adjusting, the pain went away and I was all good!
The only other times my braces hurt were for a day or two after I got them tighened but it was definitely tolerable and it didn’t last too long!
The Day-To-Day Experience:
One thing that was slighty annoying about braces was how long it took to floss and brush my teeth every night. My orthodontist told me that it was really important for me to floss, and unfortanutely it took me quite a while to floss each tooth. I had regular floss and then I had to use small plastic threads to help me thread the floss under my braces. It took me a really long time at first but I got faster and faster over time.
Was It Worth It? Any Regrets?
I definitely don’t regret getting braces. My teeth were really bad before and it was definitely worth it!
Yes, braces were annoying and a pain at times and it seemed like I was never going to be able to get them off, but looking back I am really grateful and glad I got braces. I still have to wear a retainer for quite a while (a few years) so my teeth don’t move back to the way they were, but retainers are definitely way better and easier to manage! Retainers are also nice cause you can take them off for special ocasions and you have your straight teeth!
Overall, I am really glad I got braces and I recommend them to anyone who wants to be more confident in their smile!
